Protect Your Climate Curriculum and Training
This program, in cooperation with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, develops learning activities that elementary school teachers can use to teach youth about climate protection.

The PYC curriculum includes 16 units of project-based learning activities about climate protection and reducing energy use. SEI trains 4th and 5th grade teachers to integrate these activities into their classrooms; the curriculum aligns with California State Content Standards and Environmental Principles and Concepts. SEI developed the PYC curriculum along with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District  in 2007, training 45+ Bay Area teachers during the first two years of implementation. To supplement the curriculum and training, SEI provides on-going support to teachers as curriculum is implemented, and continually evaluates the program for on-going improvement. The program provides continuing education credit to teachers who participate in a training course and integrate the lessons in their classrooms.

The curriculum is composed of hands-on demonstrations, activities, discussions, experiments and take-home assignments designed to engage students in understanding and applying climate change concepts. By integrating science, language arts, and mathematics; the curriculum encourages logic, foresight, and critical thinking, empowering students to make informed decisions and protect the climate.

The kids were intrinsically motivated. They sensed its importance. They have encountered media snippets about climate change and these sounded ominous to them. I think they are comforted by learning the real details and getting empowered.
