Helping Communities Embrace Sustainability
Eco Smart Education
Higher Education
SEI’s partnerships with colleges and universities target three primary impact areas: greening of the campus, greening of the workforce, and greening of the curriculum. Greening of the campus efforts help staff and students to optimize the operational efficiency of their institution and to make it a showcase of sustainability. Workforce greening programs engage students and area employers to support community climate planning, goal setting and implementation. Through curriculum greening efforts, SEI consults with college/university faculty and staff to design and pilot multi-disciplinary applied learning models. These approaches provide for local, applied learning opportunities for students and real benefits for local communities, while advancing sustainability education.
Our institutions of higher education represent significant intellectual and social capital for nearby communities, while at the same time, faculty are seeking opportunities to provide students with relevant and place-based sustainability challenges to address. Through the CUSP approach, SEI staff seeks to bring campuses and municipal partners together.
We’ve partnered with Optony to lead the Southwest Solar Transformation Initiative (SSTI) with a regional team of public and private entities committed to advancing solar power adoption across participating municipalities in the Southwest. As part of this effort, the SEI team will direct university students as they research solar market issues for the region, initially working with a team from University of Nevada, Los Vegas (UNLV). In addition, SEI staff will engage regional councils of governments and their municipal members in the San Joaquin Valley of California, and in parts of Colorado, Nevada and Utah.
SEI and Quantum Energy Services & Technologies (QuEST) jointly implemented Southern California Edison’s Campus Housing Energy Efficiency Retrofit (CHEER) program on private universities within Southern California Edison’s service territory.
SEI partners with The Alliance to Save Energy on the California Green Campus Program, training and managing student interns as they promote energy and water efficient technologies and practices on campus.
SEI provides design, facilitation, technical and marketing assistance to support eco-friendly behaviors on college and university campuses through the promotion of energy efficient actions and lifestyle choices.
