Helping Communities Embrace Sustainability
Eco Smart Education
K - 12
SEI develops and facilitates quality educational programs about energy and sustainability for youth. Through classroom activities as well as informal education programs after-school and over the summer, youth become environmental stewards, and in doing so, leaders in their schools and communities. Our educational approach is to focus on project-based and service learning activities, so that students develop their skills in scientific reasoning and make connections between behavior, society, and environmental consequences. SEI also trains teachers and provides comprehensive training manuals in the areas of energy and resource efficiency, climate change science, renewable energy, and green careers. SEI has also refined a process for engaging school stakeholders to collaborate on campus greening initiatives at the schoolwide or school district level.
We engage students to take a leadership role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions within their households and their communities.
SEI and its partners, Conservation Corps North Bay, Marin Community Foundation, and Cool the Earth, implement a school-based carbon reduction campaign that educates Marin youth about global warming.
SEI is coordinating with teachers, students and parents in Bay Area schools to target waste reduction and sustainability.
SEI has designed two high school certificates, one in energy efficiency and renewable energy, and one in green building, that help students understand climate change issues as well as provide an entry point for careers in green energy and green building.
The PYC curriculum includes 16 units of project-based learning activities about climate protection and reducing energy use for 4th and 5th grade elementary school teachers.
SEI and its partner MCR Performance Solutions LLC, offer the School Energy Pledge Program© through local utilities.
This award-winning program teaches students about energy efficiency, auditing techniques and sustainable living so they can share their knowledge within their schools, area small-business owners, senior citizens, parents, and other community members to help them save money.
SEI’s staff works with K-6 children in an after-school or summer camp setting. We also train camp counselors and after school coordinators to provide highly interactive projects about energy.
