SEI trains teachers to integrate these activities into their classrooms using a curriculum that aligns with California State Content Standards and Environmental Principles and Concepts.
Working with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, SEI developed the curriculum in 2007 and supported 45+ teachers during the first two years of its implementation in the San Francisco Bay Area. The program provides continuing education credit to teachers who participate in a training course and use the lessons in their classrooms. The curriculum is composed of hands-on demonstrations, activities, discussions, experiments and take-home assignments that engage students in understanding and applying important climate change concepts. By integrating science, language arts and mathematics, the curriculum encourages logic, foresight, and critical thinking, empowering students to make informed decisions and protect the climate. SEI will also provide support to teachers as they present the curriculum in their classrooms and evaluate the program by surveying teachers, students and their families.
