The program was piloted in St. Mary’s County Public Schools in 2009 and delivered to 35 schools in the Pittsburgh area during the 2009-2010 school year. The participating utilities were the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative and the Duquesne Light Company.
With this unique approach to energy savings, a utility engages students and their families in saving energy by offering energy lessons at school, a pledge program, and a toolkit to install energy-saving measures at home.
The program emphasizes home energy reduction tools and techniques. Once a family pledges to take energy saving actions, the utility sends them a free energy efficiency toolkit to help reduce the family’s energy use.
When a family pledges to reduce home energy consumption by implementing energy efficiency measures contained in the toolkit, the utility provides the school a cash incentive. Everybody wins! Family monthly energy bills are reduced, the utility spends less money supplying less energy and the school obtains greatly needed funds.
