Helping Communities Embrace Sustainability

Programs Eco Smart Education K - 12 High School Sustainability Certificate

High School Sustainability Certificate

High School Sustainability Certificate

SEI has designed two high school certificates, one in energy efficiency and renewable energy, and one in green building, that help students understand climate change issues as well as provide an entry point for careers in green energy and green building.

The first certificate focuses on energy efficiency and solar assessment and design and the second certificate introduces students to the world of green building. An internship opportunity is planned for students who complete the certificate. The energy certificate has been implemented in many high schools in California since 2009 and more than 50 teachers have been trained.

Our goal is to create a pathway for students who become interested in pursuing a career in the green workforce area. After obtaining the certificate, they will be ideal candidates to be placed in internships or to take more advanced training at local colleges and universities in solar installation, clean energy applications, electrical apprenticeships and related green workforce careers.

The certificate gives students either high school or community college credit, depending upon their needs and the level of study they select. If they choose to participate in the entire program, including in-class work and significant field work requirements, they will be eligible for the certificate and possibly, community college credit.

Teacher training is available upon request. The Introduction to the Energy Curriculum is available in Resources. The entire curriculum and supporting materials are planned to be available on this website soon. Please check back.

On Deck

A certificate on Sustainable Agriculture, with an emphasis on Biomass, is in the first stages of planning. SEI and the Ag Biomass Foundation have partnered to develop the high school course, which will introduce youth to the principles of sustainable agriculture. We will be highlighting best practices in the collaborative efforts between farmers, educators, energy producers, and technology providers. Through this project, we aim to: build youth and community understanding and support for local and sustainable agricultural practices; provide youth with internships that could open to door to careers; and contribute meaningful content to high school curriculum.

In early December 2011, a group of North Valley farmers, faculty from CSU Chico, and government representatives convened an Education Advisory Team to launch the project.
