Climate Corps Bay Area’s (CCBA) mission is to utilize AmeriCorps service Members to advance climate protection while fostering the development of emerging sustainability professionals. CCBA places 30 full-time AmeriCorps Members with local governments and community nonprofits to implement emissions reductions programs for one year. Members will spend their year of service acquiring valuable technical and professional development skills while working on local GHG reduction projects.
The program, which is in its second year, is implemented and was created jointly by Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) and Strategic Energy Innovations (SEI). SEI Partnered with BACR to address two important needs. We recognized the need to find ways to facilitate community emissions reductions, at the same time we wanted to respond to the increasing demand by people wanting to work in the field of sustainability. We saw an opportunity to create a new kind of AmeriCorps program which could support nonprofits and municipal emissions reduction work at the same time as it could support the next generation of climate leaders.
The class of 2010-2011 CCBA AmeriCorps members worked with 19 local government and non-profit agencies (see below) in the Bay Area to implement more than 50 GHG emissions reducing projects. Last year’s 28 members helped Bay Area communities achieve over 8000 metric tones of GHG reductions. Last year, 81% of our members were able to leverage their term of service into some sort of sustainability professional opportunity (33% were hired by their CCBA partner, 35% found another sustainability related job, and 13% are pursuing sustainability related graduate studies). This year (2011-2012), 30 AmeriCorps members will work with 16 Bay Area local government and non-profit agencies (see below) to advance their climate protection efforts.
In addition to managing the program, SEI staff recruits, trains, and supports the AmeriCorps Members throughout the service year.
