Eco Audit

Eco Audit

The Eco Audit curriculum provides high school students with hands-on training in energy auditing for small businesses, with the goal of recruiting businesses and helping them to save money on their operations costs by becoming more environmentally sustainable. Students will receive audit training, recruit a business to work with, perform an audit, create a report, and give a presentation on their findings both to their classmates and to the business they audited. Through this experience, students gain skills in professional communication, report writing, and completing walk-through audits and interviews.

The curriculum provides step-by-step planning and teaching instructions for the educator, including detailed instructions for preparing students for conducting outreach to businesses and tips for making sure student audits are successful. The package is appropriate for high school students, and is designed to allow a flexible schedule: it can be taught over a period of 5 class sessions to several months.

The Eco Audit curriculum was originally developed by Roots and Shoots Shanghai with help from ERM Consulting, and students have performed Eco Audits in China, India, Seattle, and now the Bay Area. SEI has taken over management of the curriculum from Eco Audit USA in Seattle, and this version has been adapted by SEI to include lessons for helping students conduct outreach to businesses.
