Home Energy Assessment

Home Energy Assessment

This curriculum guides students through an energy assessment of their home. Students gain an in-depth understanding of renewable and non-renewable energy sources that allow them to see why reducing home energy use is important. By completing a survey of their home, which includes details on structure, HVAC, appliances, lighting and water, students can analyze behaviors and steps that they and their families can take to save energy and money in their home.

In addition to focusing on individual home energy use, this curriculum also provides relevant background information on climate change and the impacts of energy use. These topics are used as a basis for discussing the importance of energy efficiency and energy conservation. Students differentiate between energy efficiency and energy conservation behaviors and take an in-depth look at the potential costs and greenhouse gas emissions savings of switching from incandescent light bulbs to CFLs.

The curriculum concludes with a home energy pledge, which provides students with suggested low and no-cost steps to save energy at home.
