Sustainability Certificate in Sustainable Enterprise

Sustainability Certificate in Sustainable Enterprise

The SEI Certificate in Sustainable Enterprise empowers students to start new initiatives in the for-profit, non-profit, and public sectors. Students use critical and creative thinking to develop an opportunity based on a problem they observe in their community or the world. The curriculum then guides instructors through the stages of business plan development and implementation so that students experience the full entrepreneurship cycle.

The curriculum explores the concept and complexities of the triple bottom line – balancing economic, social, and environmental goals. Students review and conduct a case study on existing sustainable enterprises. Teams conduct an Eco Audit to advise an existing enterprise on how to become more sustainable. Student then develop a sustainable enterprise idea and business plan, pitch their idea to an “investor panel” of business leaders from the community, and several plans are selected for implementation in small groups.

Student enterprises can be a 1-day event, a 1-semester enterprise project, or an ongoing business, either in small groups or as a long-lived school enterprise. The curriculum is ideal for a 1-2 semester implementation schedule, but it is designed to be adaptable for a range of instructional schedules. Sustainable Enterprise is a great way to foster student creativity, innovation, and leadership skills.
